Before we dive headfirst into the subject of spectroscopy, we need to first understand what spectroscopy is.
Spectroscopy takes place because of the interaction of matter with radiation.
Subsequently, two types of spectrums can arise.
- Absorption spectrum
- Or emission spectrum
Absorption Spectroscopy
Absorption spectroscopy is a method by which a substance can be characterized by the wavelengths at which the colour spectrum is absorbed when light is passed through a solution of the substance.
According to wikipedia, absorption spectroscopy is a set of techniques where radiation is absorbed
Absorption spectroscopy is employed as an analytical chemistry tool to determine the presence of a particular substance in a sample and, in many cases, to quantify the amount of the substance present.
IR spectroscopy is used to detect functional groups.
